Step into the renewal of spring with a transformative hike to Old Rag Mountain. As the forest awakens from winter, we’ll journey through budding trees, crisp mountain air, and the first signs of wildflowers emerging along the trail.
This hike blends physical challenge with mindfulness, offering a space for women to reconnect with nature, release what no longer serves them, and embrace the energy of a new season.
This hike is designed for women with some hiking experience and a moderate level of endurance.
Old Rag’s rugged terrain, including rock scrambles, and a steady incline, makes it a rewarding challenge for those ready to embrace it.

This hike is designed for those with prior hiking experience who are ready to challenge themselves. Conquering Old Rag’s 9.4-mile trail and 2,400-foot elevation gain is an accomplishment you’ll carry with you long after the journey ends.

Backpack:
To carry your provided lunch, water, and essentials.
Water:
At least 2 liters; a hydration bladder or bottles work best.
Weather-Appropriate Clothing:
Sturdy, well-broken-in boots with good grip for rock scrambles
Layered Clothing: Spring weather can be unpredictable, so dress in layers
Moisture-wicking base layer.
Lightweight fleece or insulating mid-layer.
Windproof, waterproof outer layer in case of light rain.
Safety & Comfort Items:
Trekking Poles: Adjustable poles to provide stability.
Emergency Blanket: Lightweight and compact for added safety.
First Aid Kit:A personal kit with any necessary medications.
Snacks: Quick-energy items like nuts, dried fruit, or energy bars.
Headlamp or Flashlight: In case of low light during the descent.

Trail Distance: 9.4 miles (loop). Approximately 3 miles ascent and 5 miles decent.
Elevation Gain: 2,415 feet
Permits: Not required during the off season.
Dogs: Not permitted on trail.
Lunch: A plant based lunch is provided. Please include any allergies on registration form. Each hiker is required to carry their own.
Transportation is not included.
A group message will be created for communications and car-pooling can be arranged among hikers.
Experience & Endurance: This hike is best suited for women with prior hiking experience and a moderate fitness level. Expect steep ascents and rock scrambles which require both physical readiness and attention to safety.
This hike is a physically demanding adventure requiring prior hiking experience and a moderate fitness level. To ensure you’re prepared:
Endurance Check: Can you comfortably hike for 6-8 miles on uneven terrain with some steep ascents?
Strength Check: Are you comfortable with moderate rock scrambles and climbing over boulders?
If you’re unsure about your readiness, try a shorter hike with similar elevation gain or terrain beforehand to assess your fitness level.
Build Your Endurance
Walk or hike for 2-3 miles at least 3 times per week, gradually increasing distance and difficulty.
Strengthen Key Muscle Groups
Incorporate exercises like lunges, squats, and step-ups into your routine to prepare your legs and core for climbing.
Practice with Your Gear
Take a few hikes carrying a backpack with the items listed above to ensure comfort and familiarity with your equipment..
Approach the hike with a mindset of curiosity and self-discovery. The trail is as much about the journey as it is about the destination.

Along the way, we’ll pause for mindful nature therapy activities, including a silent hiking segment and journaling reflection. After conquering Old Rag’s exhilarating rock scrambles and reaching the summit, we’ll enjoy a nourishing plant-based lunch with breathtaking views, followed by a guided meditation and affirmation sharing. The descent offers moments to soak in the accomplishment, with a final closing circle to reflect, connect, and carry the experience forward.
There will be a couple options for meeting at the trailhead. Option A is carpooling for those that live in the Hampton Roads area and will be set up prior to the event. Option B is meeting at the Ranger Station in the Old Rag Parking Lot located at 2577 Nethers Rd, Etlan, VA 22719
Yes, there is a $15 dollar entrance fee
While you are encouraged to participate in the exercises for a fulfilling experience, you are not required and may participate in what you are comfortable with.
It is important to wear comfortable hiking boots, bring layers, a hat,sunglasses, a backpack, a hydration bladder or insulated water bottles, sunscreen, and a journal and pen. There will be more info sent out to ensure a prepared and comfortable experience.
At least 3 liters. spring time in Virginia can be unusually warm and this is a strenuous, endurance hike
